Sellafield ranks as one of Europe’s largest industrial complexes, storing more radioactive waste in one place than any other nuclear facility in the world. Given the age and fragility of many of the facilities on site, the possible consequences of a serious accident would be extremely damaging for Cumbria and the rest of the UK, with repercussions extending to Europe. Recognising hazard reduction at Sellafield as a national priority, ONR has developed a new regulatory strategy with a focus on stimulating, facilitating and expediting hazard and risk reduction at the site.
