Awarded

Radium-223 therapy for bone metastasis from prostate cancer.

Descriptions

There was a palliative treatment called Strontium that could be used for bone pain, however this involved some significant side-effects and hence it has not been used for a number of years. This new treatment has been shown to significantly improve overall survival for this group of patients. (ALSYMPCA trial). Currently these patients are either sent elsewhere for the same treatment, or they do not receive treatment. This is the only radio-pharmaceutical that has been granted NICE approval for treatment of bone metastasis, and is the only Radium (223) product currently available commercially.
