RDE 435 - Informing emission limits for low carbon fuels in combustion

Descriptions

The UK drive to Net Zero has resulted in a range of industrial sectors looking at the use of low carbon fuels in combustion systems, including the use of hydrogen and/or ammonia. As these fuels start to be used, the UK Regulators in England, Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland will need to set emission limit values in environmental permits, especially for oxides of nitrogen (NOx). To progress this work, the Environment Agency has agreement from the UK/Devolved Administrations Governance on industrial pollution control, to set up a Technical Working Group to develop guidance on emission limit setting for low carbon fuels. There have already been discussions with other UK Regulators, the British Flame Research Committee, Energy UK and DESNZ regarding possible approaches for limit setting, and provision of evidence to inform the Regulators decision making. In order to progress this work, with the ambition of securing near final guidance by March 2024, there is a need for resource to assist in a number of elements of the operation of the Technical Working Group, as well as the development and drafting of the guidance. This contract was awarded by EA.
