Refurbishment of Radiotherapy Room and Replacement of Linear Accelerators

Descriptions

This project entails refurbishment of two radiotherapy treatment rooms to house replacement linear accelerators used for imaging and subsequent delivery of advanced radiotherapy treatment to cancer patients at University Hospital Birmingham, along with the associated control areas from where the machines are controlled. The linear accelerators have been selected to mirror those already installed to provide a uniform advanced technology base. As the overall timetable for installation and commissioning of the linear accelerators is a long process from decommissioning, refurbishment, installation and Physics commissioning, it is essential that the refurbishment works run to schedule in order to limit the impact of reduced treatment capacity on cancer waiting targets. High quality of refurbishment is required to meet Trust and end user requirements for clinical areas providing a welcoming and reassuring treatment area and to meet additional requirements for radiation safety. The enabling work needs to meet the manufacturer installation requirements to ensure seamless and timely installation of the very expensive and complex specialist medical equipment designed to operate at extremely close tolerances, and to treat patients for 10 years. The works consist of the replacement of a Linear Accelerator in Bunkers 1 and 10 within the Radiotherapy Department of the QE Hospital. Within these works the Bunker and Control Rooms will be fully refurbished replacing all finishes and fixtures and fittings as well as amending or replacing the existing services within the Bunkers and within the plantrooms where necessary. The existing Linear Accelerator in each Bunker will be removed by a specialist remover who will dispose of the machine and its components parts in a safe manner, within the main contract works. Within the concrete floors are support frames and ducts which will require removal/modification to allow the new support frames and services ducts to be installed. The "enabling" works by the Main Contractor need to be carried out by an experienced and knowledgably Contractor who can closely liaise with the specialist Linear Accelerator installer Elekta. The Main Contractor also needs to have knowledge of these specialist installations and be capable of installing the works to the close tolerances required by Elekta. The forming of the support framework within the sub floor, it's positioning as well as the installation of the rear wall "fascia" all need to be installed to very accurate tolerances to ensure radiation protection is maintained by positioning the new machine on the appropriate Isocentre. The Contractor needs to co-ordinate the Mechanical and Electrical Sub-Contractors and liaise with Elekta to ensure all the specialist services requirements are picked up and located correctly within the Bunker and Control Room.
