Research Data Service
Descriptions
The University invites tenders for a scalable to multi-petabyte storage solution that delivers a Research Data Store (RDS) and Research Archive Store (RAS).The Research Data Service will provide a free allocation of secure and backed up storage for live research data to each researcher/research project within the institution, and a cost model to enable researchers to buy additional storage on top of their allocation. This service will ensure the more efficient procurement and use of data storage. The Research Data Service will also enable researchers to purchase their own storage and add it to the Research Data Store. The Research Data Archiving Service will provide long term storage for archived research data in order to keep data safe and secure for the long term. This service will make use of management software to automatically move infrequently accessed data to cheaper storage media. The research archive store solution will need to integrate with our existing tape libraries (see Appendix A), and will be expected to provide automated data tiering capability based on defined rules. The overall solution will need to be fully integrated with our existing Research Information System (see Appendix A), which we expect to hold the high level metadata for datasets and provide workflow assistance for data deposit and archive functions.
