Re-usable Theatre Textiles
Descriptions
King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Market Engagement Notice – July 2025 Reusable Sterile Theatre Textiles 1. Purpose and Scope King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (The Authority) are initiating this Market Engagement Notice to improve their understanding of the market for reusable sterile theatre textiles. The Authority kindly requests that bidders respond to the questions outlined below and resubmit their completed responses in Word format. The Authority has made ambitious commitments to providing environmentally sustainable healthcare (see King’s College Hospital’s Green Plan). This includes commitments to reduce single-use items, across clinical and non-clinical practices. In line with this commitment, the Authority is now assessing how to move away from single-use to a fully circular sterile theatre textiles model. In addition to significant reductions in carbon emissions, the Authority expects this change to lead to reduced waste volumes, increased product quality, improvements in supply chain resilience as well as wider social value benefits. It is also working closely with other NHS trusts in the region, e.g. Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, to assess opportunities for regional partners to adopt a similar circular economy approach to sterile theatre textiles. The Authority currently operates across just under 50 theatres and conduct approximately 48,000 operations and procedures per year. As a conservative estimate, the Authority will use 100,000 gowns and 50,000 drapes per year. 2. Subject Specific Questions 1. Overall offering: a. Please describe your offering of reusable sterile theatre textiles, including a high-level overview of types and sizes. b. For the reusable sterile theatre textiles that your company provides, would you be able to supply the entirety of the Authority’s required volume, if required? Please answer this question based on estimates derived from the number of theatres and annual procedures provided above. Please also provide an indication of your capacity to supply reusable sterile theatre textiles to regional partners within South East London. 2. Environmental sustainability a. Please provide an indication of the expected average number of uses per reusable textile before it is no longer fit for purpose. b. Please specify what happens with your product once it is no longer fit for its original purpose. c. Please provide an overview of the environmental sustainability of your operations beyond the reusable product itself. Where this has been externally certified (e.g. ISO, B Corp), please clearly state this. d. Please provide an overview of where your reusable products are manufactured and processed and provide additional information about your supply chain not previously covered. 3. Costs a. Please provide a high-level cost comparison of your reusable sterile theatre textiles vs standard single-use items currently available on the market; per usage. You might want to include a product-specific case study. b. In addition to the cost per item per usage, please list any other cost considerations here, e.g. loss charges. 4. Compliance and reporting a. Please provide an overview of your compliance with relevant regulation and standards. Where this has been externally certified, please clearly state this. 3. Next steps Please note that we might like to invite respondents to attend a meeting with the Authority and regional partners to discuss your product offering in more detail. Please express interest and respond via the Atamis portal - under project reference C363618.
