Review of British Mammals
Descriptions
Defra procuring on behalf of Natural England (NE) The overall aim of the project is to update; Harris, S., Morris, P., Wray, S., & Yalden, D. 1995. A review of British mammals: population estimates and conservation status of British mammals other than cetaceans. The project will seek to update this review for all terrestrial mammals known to breed in GB and provide further information detailed below. The project will exclude cetaceans and pinnipeds. For each species there should be an assessment of the current status, historical and recent changes in numbers, population trends and population threats and range. For some mammal species long term monitoring data is available and considered robust e.g. the National Dormouse Monitoring Programme (NDMP) and the National Bat Monitoring Data (NBMP). However, many species are not subject to long term monitoring programmes and are less well studied. Therefore assessments should be made based on the most recent available evidence from long term monitoring of the species, knowledge of habitat requirements and ecology of the species and all other relevant methods where data may be lacking or may need a considerable amount of collation.
