SPAG Lot 1. Inflatable Protective Clothing for Motorcyclists - Research Project

Descriptions

4.1The primary objective of this research is to establish, based on current evidence, whether or not airbag technology, used as part of a motorcyclist's clothing, has the potential to prevent or reduce injuries and to save lives. 4.2We are aware that airbag technology has been used in clothing in recent years in the equestrian and motorcycle sporting world. However, the Department's work on helmet safety (from which the SHARP - Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme - evolved) identified that the injury mechanisms experienced in competition conditions are not the same as those experienced on public roads and in road traffic incidents. This study into air bag technology will provide a review of injury mechanisms relating to road casualties (killed and seriously injured) for which air bag technology in clothing may have potential.
