Specialist Gas Installation Works

Descriptions

Required Works for the installation of a permanent bottled Gas installation with fixed Regulators and fixed pipework to the points of use.The base requirements are given, to allow the contractor to design and install the full permanent gas installation within the laboratories, including any safety requirements deemed necessary. Contractor to include within their submittal gas valve types pipe sizing gas detection alarms in line with the attached specification. Room Gas detectionThe contractor selected will fulfil the role of (Principle) designer and Principle) contractor under the CDM regulations. The majority of laboratories at the Bay Campus use bottled gas. By far the largest quantities of gases used are inert but there are some that are toxic or flammable. To comply with mandatory requirements all fixed gas installations require a written scheme of works which will include an up to date risk assessment and a written scheme of inspection. After consultation with GasCon (the university gas specialist) it was decided to put in place a standardised Protocol for all laboratories to comply with the Legal and mandatory obligations. The requirements for the installation of the gas bottles are to comply with regulations and also the advice of the fire fighting service. These are that, Gas bottles with Inert gas will be strapped to walls in permanent positions and connected to gas regulators that that are also fixed to a backboard above the bottle positions. The type of pipework will be appropriate for the gas to be used between regulators and the points of use.For systems not requiring high purity Nitrogen, gas generators could be used providing an alternative to cylinder stored compressed nitrogen. If this were to be considered then I would strongly recommend the systems are installed where required with additional nitrogen storage and a compressed backup system inline located in the gas room as above.Where Nitrogen generators are available they need to be used to their maximum capacity and supplemented with bottles at peak times.Where several labs in the same area require Nitrogen a multi lab calculation can be carried to out to check viability in cost terms for the purchase of extra generatorsGas bottles with Toxic / Flammable gases will be housed in 90minute fire rated cabinets. Bottles will be strapped into the cabinets and connect to fixed position regulators mounted on a back board mounted at the highest possible location in the cabinet. The appropriate type of pipework will then run from the regulators through the roof of the cabinet to the point of use. Each cabinet will be vented to the external generally via the fume cabinet forced extraction flue. The cabinets will only house like type gases and the cabinets will have gas alarms that are connected into the BMS with a severe warning status at the controllers screen.Gas escape alarms will be installed after a mandatory risk assessment has taken place. The risk assessment will, in all cases be based on a catastrophic failure. A volumetric calculation will be carried out for the whole room void when the gases are lighter than air. The volumetric calculation will only be the bottom two metres of the room when the gas is heavier than air.Further information is available within the tender documents.NOTE: The authority is using eTenderwales to carry out this procurement process.
