SPU CO04-2023 - Scientific and Technical Support for Progressing the Designation of Marine Special Protection Areas under Directive 2009/147/EC

Descriptions

The National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage is responsible for the conservation of natural habitats and species and the protection of biological diversity in Ireland. Ireland is obliged to classify the most suitable territories in number and size as special protection areas for the conservation of regularly occurring migratory birds and those listed on Annex I to Directive 2009/147/EC. To date, terrestrial, freshwater and intertidal habitats constitute the majority of the habitats within Ireland’s SPA Network. Focus has now shifted to the marine environment to assess and identify further marine areas to go forward for classification as SPAs. The designation of further marine SPAs involves several steps including the compilation of various evidence bases, the production of draft maps and other relevant documentation including EU Natura 2000 Standard Data Forms. NPWS are seeking one suitably qualified and experienced candidate for 220 days for service between September 13th, 2021 and September 16th, 2022. The work is to be undertaken in 90 North King Street, Dublin 7* to assist with tasks relating to the SPA designation process. *Although it is preferred that the successful tenderer will be based in NPWS HQ current and future public health guidance or other reasons may dictate that the person works in full or in part from their own base.
