St Elvan Community Heritage Project

Descriptions

The St Elvan Church, Community Heritage Project, is a community based initiative that has received confirmation of funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Pen-y-Cymmoedd Fund and other funding bodies. The construction works are being undertaken in a single phase commencing in March/April 2019, with a view to completion by January 2020.The client’s ‘Initial Brief’ for the project made it clear that the desire was to develop an appropriate and contemporary installation within St Elvan’s church that would provide the church with facilities that continue to provide appropriate spaces for worship, but also provide accommodation that allows the church to further re-engage with the local community in Aberdare. In essence the project includes for the conservative repair and refurbishment of parts of the historic fabric identified in the latest Quinquennial Inspection Report as requiring attention in the near future, along with significant alterations to the interior of the church to meet the demands of the current and future congregation and to allow the church to play a more holistic role in the community of Aberdare. The proposed Heritage and Community use of the church over and above its religious activities demands that the spaces within must be able to be flexible in order to accommodate the various likely uses. The wider project also includes for a new heritage interpretation installation along with numerous activities that will be undertaken post-construction.The requirement to be able to accommodate such varied uses within a church means that significant additional services installations are necessary to be able to provide the facilities demanded by such activitiesThe proposals for the interior of the church are quite dramatic and include for the construction of a new freestanding mezzanine structure to create additional usable multi puprose space on the first floor with a new café and wc’s beneath. The overall construction cost for the works is expected to be in the region of 1,080,000 GBP and the project will commence on site in early 2019 with completion in early 2020.The scheme is complex both in terms of the various parties and stakeholders involved, and the sensitive approach required to undertake significant works on a building protected by statute (grade II* listed) and treasured by the local community. The Design Team is led by Alwyn Jones Architects (specialists in building conservation) and includes Cleaver and Co (Quantity Surveyors), Bradley Associates (Consulting Structural Engineers) and McCann and Partners (Building Services Engineers). The building contract will be let under the JCT Standard Building Contract With Quantities.Refer to attached PQQ document for further details.NOTE: To register your interest in this notice and obtain any additional information please visit the Sell2Wales Web Site at https://www.sell2wales.gov.wales/Search/Search_Switch.aspx?ID=88052.
