STEAM Workshop Facilitation for Adults

Descriptions

FEAT support adults with mental health conditions to secure employment through a range of programmes and we know that many of our clients are not confident in numeracy. To support development of numeracy and wider skills, we have secured from the UK Government’s Multiply Programme to deliver a series of 6-day Adult STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) workshops inspired by Silverburn Flax Mill. The overall objective is to help develop numeracy skills, with the aim of an onward referral to a more focused numeracy intervention provided by others in the Fife Multiply Pathway. The pathway includes colleges, third and statutory sector services - these other organisations being more skilled, experienced in numeracy support, and able to offer qualifications. Our minimum requirement from this programme is that participants have improved confidence in numeracy. This activity will also support our individuals to begin to remove/reduce one of their remaining challenges to securing employment, and encouraging them to develop their numeracy levels further. These are not individuals who would otherwise seek this support independently. The workshops are based on similar activity we have delivered to primary and secondary school groups in Silverburn Park during 2022 and 2023, funded through the National Lottery Heritage Fund as one element of our activities programme that coincides with the large-scale capital restoration project of the B-listed flax mill. The flax mill restoration is an 8m+ GBP construction contract to rejuvenate the building and create a visitor centre and community hub. The activities programme is designed to engage the local population with the heritage and history of the mill and the Park, however these workshops were originally considered only for school pupils to add learning to their curriculum, however the numeracy skills developed are transferable to an adult population who lack skills or confidence in this area
