Descriptions

The Authority is in the process of creating their own laboratory at their Police Headquarters site in Bridgend which will provide Forensic Services including the analysis of controlled drugs for South Wales and Gwent Police. It has been identified that a Fourier Transfer Infrared Spectrophotometer (FTIR) with Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) attachment is required within the laboratory. The FT-IR will be used in the identification of controlled drugs in unknown powders. The ATR attachment allows for samples to be introduced directly into the instrument which makes the analysis and identification time very fast. The instrument will be used principally for the identification of controlled and unspecified powders, but the application of this technique to other aspects of forensic analysis will be of interest. There shall also be a reuirement for installation, training and annual maintenance.
