Forestry Commission Scotland has a large number of ‘Bailey’ type temporary bridges on the Forest Estate. These are used where access is required to forest blocks for harvesting or other works where permanent bridge construction is not justified. They are also used for emergency bridge replacement and construction access.This stock is aging and Forestry Commission Scotland has an ongoing programme of decommissioning and replacement. In addition older bridges are too narrow for modern harvesting and construction traffic.This framework contract, to run over four years is for the supply of new temporary bridges to continue this process.The bridges will be used by timber hauliers (44 tonne road vehicles) but also by timber harvesting equipment and forwarders, construction traffic and site dumpers with gross weight of 50 tonne on 3 axles.A deck width of 4.2 m is required to allow for this machinery.Forestry sites may have restricted access making use of cranes for bridge construction difficult or impossible. This will be taken into account when assessing bids.Due to the wide variety of site and use preference will be given to modular systems which may be built to span and load capacity required in any given situation.The successful bidder will be expected to deliver goods to site within 6 weeks of confirmation of order unless otherwise agreed with FC.
