Tender for a Wind Tunnel

Descriptions

The College of Science has a requirement for a wind tunnel for testing living birds. With this system, the bird sets its own wings to fly in the tunnel. This approach was devised in the 1960s, when its potential was only partly developed. The size and speed of the tunnel are designed to provide natural flying conditions for any bird that might be used. Force measurements are made by looking at the bird’s balance, rather than from in-tunnel instruments. The wind tunnel is funded through the European Research Council (ERC) project at Swansea University
