To achieve the objectives of COATED at Swansea University, it is essential to have the ability to accurately characterise surfaces and interface, including imaging and microanalysis. Methods include high resolution electron microscopy (including WDS, EDS and EBSD), Scanning Kelvin Probe Atomic force microscopy, Scanning Vibrating electrode techniques, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and X-Ray diffraction. The majority of these techniques require very high quality surface qualities to deliver the very best results. Often traditional grind / polish techniques introduce damage (both mechanical and chemical) to the surface / interface of interest which can significantly retard the capabilities of the analytical techniques. To this end, an ion beam cross-sectioner-polisher capable of producing damage free cross sections and free surfaces has been identified as vital to the Centre’s activities. Funding for the purchase of this equipment has been made available through an EPSRC CDT grant. The CDT resides within the EPSRC / TSB funded SPECIFIC IKC on functional coatings where the focus is predominantly (though not restricted to) the development of functional coatings (energy storage and release) on steel and glass substrates. However, the unit should also be capable of milling a wider range of materials such as polymers and ceramics.Please note that EU funding may apply to this contract.
