The Piece Hall Transformation Project and New Halifax Central Library and Archive Project.

The contracting authority intend to procure a main contractor to deliver a contract comprising 2 major elements.The contracting authority reserves the right to withdraw either or both of the elements from this contract notice. Further details concerning this approach will be available at tender stage.The 1st element of the project is the regeneration and conservation of Calderdale's most important heritage building: the Piece Hall, in Halifax. The project will include restoration and conservation work to the unique, Grade 1 listed building, the regeneration of the central courtyard as an attractive and thriving town square, and a new build annexe. It will deliver a modern infrastructure suitable for a 21st Century visitor attraction, a state-of-the-art interpretation and learning centre, and, by 2015, provide accommodation for a range of bespoke retail and commercial businesses. The Piece Hall Transformation Project is funded in part by the Council, and in part by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).The 2nd element is a new build central library and archive, to be built on the site of a former church adjacent to the Piece Hall, and encompassing the surviving (and historically significant) church spire. The New Central Library building will be a place to learn, study and meet, a repository for Calderdale's extensive archive, and will form an important part of Halifax's civic infrastructure. Associated external works will include the creation of an eastern entrance to the Piece Hall, and improvements to the former Industrial Museum building, also adjacent to the Piece Hall. The New Central Library Project is funded by Calderdale Council.Together, the 2 projects will contribute significantly to the cultural and commercial life of Halifax, Calderdale and the wider region.
