The project proposes the sympathetic restoration and repair of Pontypool Indoor Market, a Grade II Listed Building dating from 1893/4. The site is in the ownership of Torfaen County Borough Council.The main part of the Indoor Market is a large single storey hall with stalls lining aisles on all four sides. This is cradled by buildings that line Crane Street and Commercial Street in the centre of Pontypool and within the town's Conservation Area. The overall ground floor space is approximately 1770m2, with around 870.5m2 of the space available for letting.The restoration of the market will safeguard the existing building whilst demonstrating best practice techniques in conservation practices. It will provide a new public space that is sympathetic to its original use but also considers mixed use which compliments the other activities taking place in the town centre. The Market must rem! ain in operation whilst the refurbishment work is being carried out and keeping the Market trading will be of the utmost importance which the successful Contractor must ensure throughout the various phase of work.The main contractor is expected to carry out all the refurbishment work including Electrical and Mechanical services; which will include setting up temporary stall areas to enable the works to be undertaken.
