Towards a Sustainable Woodland–arboriculture reconfiguration, thinning, scrub clearance felling works
Descriptions
This project includes a requirement for arboriculture reconfiguration, selective thinning, and scrub clearance felling works. The project aims to extend and improve the biodiversity value of an important area of the historic parkland of the Garden estate and in consequence also to enhance visitor access and enjoyment. More widely it is one project in a wider series that are pump priming and beginning to build the Garden’s ambition of demonstrating and using its wider estate and timber resources in ways that take it towards a sustainable woodland and way of working. In 2001 the dam retaining the lake on the National Nature Reserve burst and Llyn Mawr was lost. In intervening years scrubby woodland of hazel and alder has invaded. This has impacted adversely on biodiversity of the lakeside and prevents visitor enjoyment of the vistas that were a major feature of this important Regency landscape. Removing and reconfiguring the overgrown areas, thinning selected trees in that area and therefore reducing canopy cover in parts, as well as clearing the scrub, aims to benefit biodiversity by encouraging and allowing regeneration of lakeside species, enhancing habitats, and allowing, in the longer term, selected specimen planting of Regency era trees. It also expects to benefit visitors by giving access to improved views and improve the quality and accessibility of the area. The quotation sought is for arboriculture and clearance work in line with the specification provided.
