Newport is a small town located on Clew Bay, along the N59, between Westport and Mulranny, in the Barony of Burrishoole. The town has seen many changes over the years and faces many economic challenges and rural challenges. In 2010 the launch of the first section of the Great Western Greenway between Newport and Mulranny made a huge impact on the town. Following on from that in early 2011 the final sections of the greenway including links to Westport and Achill were completed and it is now the longest off-road walking and cycling trail in Ireland. An estimated 300 people cycle and walk the trail each day. Voluntary groups have galvanised together to present Newport in the best light possible to visitors and tourists to the area.Newport Business Association was founded in 2017 with the aim to be a collective voice and support network for local businesses. The Newport Business Association feels that by delivering this project for Newport it will have an impact on locals and visitors alike. The Benefits will be felt not only in Newport, but also in its hinterlands and surrounding villages. It will Increase tourism to the town as a result of further items of interest for tourists to visit and further international links with Monaco and the global Kelly and O’Malley diaspora
