Descriptions

Display cases. Please note this is a contract award notice and not a live tender opportunity.Display cases. The Victoria and Albert Museum runs a diverse programme of temporary exhibitions which are shown at South Kensington to complement the Museum's permanent collection. The temporary exhibitions programme aims to present a balance of historical and contemporary, popular and scholarly shows; it also features multi-media exhibitions which focus on a particular period or theme or exhibitions which look at a single British or international artist or designer. The V&A is currently preparing for the temporary exhibition Wedding Dress: 1775-2014 which will explore the development of the fashionable white wedding dress from the late 18th century to the present day.The V&A is inviting expressions of interest from museum Display Case Specialist Contractors to carry out detailed design, fabrication and installation of display cases as part of the development of its new temporary exhibition gallery used for fashion displays (Gallery 40, mezzanine level). The cases will be bespoke, moveable cases required to comply with the V&A's standard Case specification requirements (see attached document). The dimensions of all cases are defined in the Invitation to Tender.A key requirement is that the cases must be moveable within the mezzanine gallery space. As well as accommodating this exhibition, the cases must also provide a dynamic and flexible space for future temporary fashion exhibitions. The mezzanine level of Gallery 40 is a clear open space, with no permanent wall construction. Wedding Dress: 1775-2014 will be the first exhibition to utilise the new showcases on the mezzanine level. The exhibition will display approximately 20 mannequins in cases, dating from 1962 to 2014.The Display Case Contractor must be able to demonstrate recent experience in detailed design development, manufacture and installation in Museum/Historic Buildings environments. The Display Case Contractor will need to be able to share the V&A and Design Team's vision which will transform the space into an ideal location to display a diversity of fashion exhibitions; combining sensitivity to the building and the collections with an imaginative, sustainable, collaborative and transformative approach. The Exhibition Designers for the project are an internal team.Wedding Dress: 1775-2014 is planned to open to the public on 3.5.2014. The appointment of the Display Case Contractor is anticipated to be late November 2013 with the Display Case installation to be completed by end of March 2014.
