Descriptions
The West Rhyl Coastal Defence Scheme is being procured by Denbighshire County Council to provide a ‘best value’ solution for construction of the West Rhyl Coastal Defence Scheme. The scheme is required to address existing problems of potential flooding caused by overtopping and breach, and to take account of sea level rise associated with climate change. The scheme is fundamentally split into three elements:-refurbishment of the existing training wall, approx 800m in length, by encasing the existing structure with rock armour along its length including associated navigation markers, as dictated by Trinity House;The harbour wall involves the stabilisation and refurbishment of the existing harbour wall, the placement of sheet piling to create a toe for the rock armour revetment, running from its interface with the training wall and the new cycleway bridge at Quay Street, and from the new cycleway bridge up to the Foryd harbour bridge the placement and anchoring of full height sheet piling in front of the existing wall;The stepped revetment involves the placement of a sheet piled toe to support precast concrete stepped sections creating a promenade facility which promotes tourism as well as providing protection from breach and overtopping.The nature of the work involved will be:•Procurement and placement of rock revetment approx 70k tonnes of nominal 3-5T rock;•200m of approx 14m long piles to form new harbour wall and associated anchors;•430m of approx. 11m long piles as toe to rock revetment;•450m of precast stepped revetment with associated toe piles;•input into buildability issues at design stage (especially for the stepped revetment);•environmental enhancements with hard/soft landscaping to promenade;•review of design under a value engineering process;
