Bridge Maintenance and Operation
Descriptions
Norfolk County Council is responsible for the maintenance of the Haven Bridge, and the maintenance and operation of the Herring Bridge, which are both twin-leaf lifting bridges located in the port town of Great Yarmouth. The Haven Bridge is operated by Peel Ports on behalf of Great Yarmouth Port Authority, who have a statutory obligation to operate the bridge for navigation.
Haven Bridge was opened in 1930 but underwent a significant mechanical and electrical upgrade between 2021 and 2023. Herring Bridge was opened to traffic in February 2024.
Existing contracts expire in February 2026 [Haven Bridge] and January 2027 [Herring Bridge]. The council is currently scoping requirements for the procurement of a replacement contract or contracts.
