Descriptions
Cambridge City Council wishes to procure a contract for the provision of public art at Mill Road Cambridge.
The Council is seeking a professional artist to work with the Mill Road community, local organisations and key stakeholders to develop public art commissions within the Mill Road neighbourhoods. The work will begin with initial engagement and co-creation activities with residents, the wider community and organisations. The artist will respond to ideas, stories and lived experiences, and create work that is relevant and rooted in the identity of Mill Road.
The aims of the project are to create a welcoming gateway into Mill Road that celebrates the neighbourhood’s diversity, creativity and strong sense of community. The artwork should encourage engagement and footfall, support civic pride, and embed public art into the everyday experience of people moving through the area.
The City Council wishes to appoint a professional artist to lead, develop and deliver a series of public physical art pieces for the Mill Road area. The appointed artist must be a skilled, high-quality practitioner, particularly in mural painting, who will design and execute the final artworks. Through community engagement, that will guide the themes and direction, the creation, design and production of the artwork will be professionally authored and delivered by the commissioned artist.
The commissioned artist will design and deliver:
• A mural on a wall under Carter Bridge
• A sequence of murals on panelling ahead of the bridge from the Rustat Roadside
This commission offers an opportunity to create meaningful, high-quality artwork that celebrates the unique and diverse identity of Mill Road, strengthens local pride, and forms a visible gateway into the Mill Road, Petersfield and Romsey neighbourhoods. The work should be original, site-responsive, and reflective of the wider experiences of the community, while showcasing the artist’s distinctive practice and expertise.
