CEFAS22-83 (Bycatch mitigation in small-scale fisheries in Indonesia)
Descriptions
The overarching aim of this project is to trial a compensation-based approach to bycatch mitigation in small-scale fisheries, assess its impact on conservation outcomes and fisher well-being, and provide data and recommendations for longer-term implementation and scaling. To achieve this aim the project has three key objectives: 1.Expand the timescale of the existing 4-month pilot project in Indonesia, providing compensatory payments for fishers for 12-months in total, and thus providing trial data which also accounts for seasonal variations in catches 2.Expand monitoring activities, with a focus on post-release survivability, so that the cost-effectiveness assessment can account for post-release mortality rates. Additionally, data collected on behaviour and movement of these Threatened species could inform on appropriate bycatch mitigations measures in the future (e.g. through spatio-temporal closures, technical measures etc.). 3.Communicate results to key stakeholders and decision-makers for potential application to other sites and species.
