Improve vaccination uptake in secure and detained estate settings

Descriptions

mprove vaccination uptake in secure and detained estate settings The project aims to increase vaccination literacy in secure and detained estate settings including adult prisons, immigration removal centres (IRCs), Children and Young People Secure Estates, in order to improve uptake of key vaccinations amongst these populations. Review of Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNAs) conducted across local authorities (Norfolk, Southwark, Wakefield, Surrey and East Essex) identified lack of knowledge amongst staff, prisoners, asylum seekers and children as a key barrier to vaccination and screening uptake in detained estate settings. Adults and children across secure and detained settings experience greater health problems than the rest of the population. Individuals within prisons are more likely to experience additional healthcare needs, such as neurodevelopmental disorders, substance misuse and mental health disorders. Recent UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) research highlights that asylum seekers are open to screenings and vaccinations when provided with clear, accessible information on health protection and options available. Subject matter experts have highlighted a lack of national accessible and appropriate learning resources on vaccinations for people living and working in secure and detained estates. The proposed multi-phase project will develop five bespoke vaccination learning programmes, tailored to specific cohorts: adult men, adult women, children, healthcare staff, operational staff). The project involves five phases: review of existing material, engagement with staff and prisoners/children, design learning programme, implementation and evaluation. The specification detailing the requirements within each of these phases, has been developed with close partnerships with a supportive steering group made up of SMEs with representation from over 10 different organisations working with the secure and detained estates to improve healthcare.
