Newport Indoor Market
Descriptions
Newport Market is a traditional Victorian indoor market, built in 1854 in Newport, South Wales. It is an early example of a large-span cast iron-frame building featuring a glass-filled barrel roof. The market houses over 100 stalls over two floors and also houses a Business Centre on the upper floors. It is a Grade II-Listed building situated in the city centre, owned and operated by Newport City Council. The Entrances to the market are located in Upper Dock Street, High Street, Market Street and Griffin StreetThe proposed works include the realignment of the Upper Dock Street entrance, reverting to the original design concept of the building with the entrances of Royal Chambers and the Market building to be central along the main façade. The interior Market entrance will be reconfigured to create a food court and there will be alterations to the adjacent shop units. In order to create a new restaurant on the ground floor and new toilet facilities in the basement, structural alterations will be necessary and new mechanical and electrical services will be required. The existing glazed canopy will also be removed and replaced with a new one.
