Awarded

Supply of a Flow Battery system for integration into an existing Energy Storage System (ESS)

Descriptions

The Active Classroom, located Swansea University’s Bay Campus. The Active Building Centre, in collaboration with SPECIFIC, wish to purchase a novel, commercially deployable flow battery system designed to be directly compatible with existing Victron power generation equipment installed at the Active Classroom, allowing advanced and precise control from SPECIFICs custom Building Management System. Flow batteries are an ideal candidate for stationary electrical energy storage, favouring the highly cyclic nature of a photovoltaic ESS in the UKs climate. No maintenance, engineering, installation or other services are required. One provider will provide a 48V flow battery array capable of storing 120kWh of electrical energy, able to supply up to 36kW continuously and up to 60kW peak. Physically, the array will fit within the available footprint of 2.4 L x 1.9 W x 1.2 H metres in the plant room of the Active Classroom, weighing no more than 2900 kg due to the load bearing capacity of the installed floor. The battery system will be capable of daily cyclic charge / discharge to 0% State of Charge with no degradation or loss of capacity. The chemistry of the battery array will not be capable of thermal runaway and will be intrinsically fire retardant. The charge status and health of each battery in the array will ideally be visible to the main Building Management System, with the mode of each battery in the array being individually controllable.
