Cardiff University is a member of the Russell Group with an annual budget of some £430 million, 21,000 undergraduate and 7,500 postgraduate students together with nearly 6,000 staff of all categories, in the 2010-11 academic year. A wide range of courses are offered by its 26 Academic schools and the Centre for Lifelong Learning. The University also includes 5 Administrative Directorates. As part of its mission to be a world class research led University, and a centre of excellence in its teaching, the University provides excellent computing facilities. There are approximately 12,000 desktop Windows PCs connected to a wide range of resources via a large switched ethernet with 10Mbps, 100Mbps, and 1Gbps sections. Most desktop file, application and print services are provided using a Novell based infrastructure. Some services can be accessed via an extensive 1,400 access point wireless network and there may be a need for some desktop PC systems to access services via this route. A large part of the service is delivered to desktop PCs using the automated deployment of standard Windows XP & 7 images. The proposed Contract is aimed at providing standard desktop PC hardware to maintain & develop that corporate desktop service and to support other general desktop IT needs. A limited number of desktop chipsets (including Intel's SIPP and a few "eco" models) are approved for use with the standard Windows images. Purchasers may select other specifications if those systems are not required to run the standard desktop image.
