Tfl_scp_002016_Speed Alerting System

Descriptions

The Mayor has committed to a Vision Zero approach to reducing road danger in London, as part of an ambition to rid London’s streets of death and serious injury by 2041. The Mayor and TfL have adopted a Safe System approach, which recognises that through delivering action across the themes of safe speeds, safe streets, safe vehicles and safe behaviours, road danger can be reduced. The potential of speed alerting technology to prevent speeding and significantly reduce the risk of a fatal or serious collision has led TfL to look at ways to incorporate speed alerting technology across its commercial vehicle fleet. TfL’s commercial fleet is approximately 900 vehicles, our aim is to eliminate/significantly reduce instances of speeding in the fleet. TfL’s commercial vehicle fleet is long-term leased and comprised mostly of small, medium or large vans or drop sides (~80%), and a small proportion of cars (~20%). Approximately 4 000 staff are authorised to drive these vehicles. Telematics Vehicle Telematics have been progressively rolled out in the TfL fleet. As a result, approximately 90 % of the TfL Fleet has telematics equipment fitted and all new vehicles are now procured with telematics fitted as standard. The Vision Zero action plan sets out an action to continue the roll out of telematics technology to all the vehicles in our fleet and is expected to be 100 % compliant by December 2020. The Fleet vehicles current setup is as follows: • Telematics System — Teletrac Navman; • Telematics box: Qube software version is 19.31912; • Cameras: smart witness KP1 (for the majority of fleet) and vision track VT1000 (since December); • RFID Cards.
