Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary and Thames Valley Police Joint Operations Unit (JOU) firearms Unit invite suitable organisations to tender for the Forces Ballistic Body Armour Contract.Most Police Officers in Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary and Thames Valley Police do not routinely carry firearms. Where firearms support is needed, it is carried out by specially trained and accredited Firearms Officers known as Authorised Firearms Officers (AFOs). An Authorised Firearms Officer (AFO) is a Police Officer who has been selected, trained, accredited, and authorised by a Chief Officer to carry a firearm operationally. The JOU currently have approximately 350 AFO's across the two Forces, these include Rifle Officers, Armed Response Vehicle Officer, and the Close Protection Group.
