Within Government in Northern Ireland DfC has strategic responsibility for urban regeneration, community and voluntary sector development, social legislation, housing, social security benefits, pensions and child support. Placed within DfC is the Urban Community and Policy Directorate (UCPD) within which is the Voluntary and Community Unit (VCU) which has a responsibility for taking forward voluntary and community engagement. A key element of ensuring successful engagement is the delivery of NI's 1st ever Volunteering Strategy ‘Join in, Get Involved: Build a Better Future’. Central to this strategy is promoting the benefits of volunteering and providing effective support to volunteering. Key to VCU support for volunteering is the Volunteering Small Grants Programme. On the 8.5.2016, the number of Northern Ireland Departments will be reduced from 12:00 to 21:00. The Department for Social Development (DSD) will become part of the Department for Communities (DfC). The legislation needed to effect the change has been completed and includes the Departments (Transfer of Functions) Order (NI) 2016 (the 2016 Order) which makes general provision for the transfer of all assets and liabilities associated with a transferring Departmental function, including contractual rights and liabilities.
