Restoration Project — Sheerness Dockyard Church

Descriptions

The former Sheerness Naval Dockyard Church stands on the entrance to the Sheerness Docks. The church was built in 1828 and is Grade II* Listed and is situated in the Sheerness Royal Naval Dockyard and Blue Town Conservation Area. In 2001 the Church suffered a serious fire putting it on the Historic England ‘At Risk’ register. The fire has rendered the building derelict with no roof. The building is currently stabilised with scaffolding after a substantial grant was awarded for this purpose from Historic England. Now, under the ownership of the Sheerness Dockyard Preservation Trust and with a major grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, this project will renovate and restore the building. We are seeking to sympathetically restore the building envelope back to its original 1 828 form, re-instating the original roof and parapets, landscaping the grounds and creating parking for users. The interior will be a modern, architecturally pleasing and user-friendly environment.
